A Monster Calls -- Michelle Bien

12:07. Seven minutes past midnight. That was when the monster would come to Conor’s backyard. The monster was so big the house groaned when he leaned on it. But the monster was nothing compared to the nightmares Conor dealt with while he slept. And nothing compared to the terrible truth that was happening in Conor’s home, or the relentless bullying at school. But the monster wasn’t expecting Conor to not be frightened. He narrowed his eyes. You will be, it said. Before the end.

The author writes with an emotional truth that makes you feel upset, you hurt for Conor, and grieve with him. You try to figure out why it is so hard for Conor to sort out what is real, and what is not. Every chapter ends with a cliff hanger.

The book is illustrated with dark, spooky images. The illustrator used everything from beetles to breadboards to create interesting marks and textures.

I loved reading this book, and I hope you do, too.
