The Alchemist

 

 

I read The Alchemist in one night when I was 20. I was in Inuvik and had just finished canoeing the Mackenzie River in the NWT. The story is about a young shepherd who keeps having the same dream. The dream eventually leads the shepherd to leave his home and begin an incredible journey full of adventure. The book's message is simple -- 'If you want something the world will help you get it, but you must take the first step and go after what you want.'

ROOM – what if your entire life experience happened in an 11’ x 11’ space, you had no knowledge of the outdoors, and the vast world (trees, grass, sunshine) which most people take for granted - this is the world that 5 year old Jack knows. His mother was abducted at the age of 19 and has been held captive for 7 years.

The Cellist of Sarajevo

One Book One Community is what it sounds like. Our entire community reads the same book and then gets together to talk about it. The book for 2012 is "the Cellist of Sarajevo" by Steven Galloway. The fictional novel tells the story of ordinary lives in difficult times. It was inspired the true story of a cellist (pictured above) who played in bombed out buildings during the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s. One Book One Community Weekend is on October 12-13. "The Cellist of Sarajevo" has become an international bestseller, but did you know that Vedran Smailović, the Cellist of Sarajevo, is furious at Steven Galloway for what he sees as stealing his story. Galloway's book never names the Cellist and the story only revolves around this anonymous musician, but Smailović was so angry that he threatened to burn his famous cello as a protest. The situation brings up interesting questions. Does Smailović deserve compensation from Galloway? Artists draw inspiration from life, but is there a line over which inspiration becomes exploitation?

The Medicine Hat College Library & the Medicine Hat Public Library along with Eagle Butte, Hat High, & Crescent Heights High School invites all students to participate in a new reading initiative this school year. The idea is simple enough. We want you to read more. To that end 20 books have been chosen that cover stories from UFC Champion Georges St. Pierre, to nightly visits from a monster, to a piano prodigy, to the NCAA & March Madness.

Some books you’ll be inclined to read. Some you won’t, but we’d like you to try something new and read them all over this school year and then vote on your favorite. We’ve planned events and prizes for those who participate. Details, updates and everything you need to know can be found right here or just drop by any one of our libraries.
