The Medicine Hat College Library & the Medicine Hat Public Library along with Eagle Butte, Hat High, & Crescent
Heights High School invites all students to participate in a new reading
initiative this school year. The idea is simple enough. We want you to read
more. To that end 20 books have been chosen that cover stories from UFC Champion Georges St. Pierre, to nightly visits from a monster, to a piano prodigy, to the NCAA & March Madness.
Some books you’ll be inclined to read. Some you won’t, but we’d like
you to try something new and read them all over this school year and then vote on your favorite. We’ve planned
events and prizes for those who participate. Details, updates and everything
you need to know can be found right here or just
drop by any one of our libraries.
So come check us out. Read something new. Yolo.

I went to the library wondering what I should get for a book. The librarian says why not this one, it’s a quick, short, and easy book. I pick it up and read the back. It’s about a guy named Kenzie that takes his eyes off the road and hits a pedestrian with his bike. But it’s not just any pedestrian it’s his ex-girlfriend Stassi. Was this an accident or not? People start make rumors saying that he did it by purpose and that he had a reason to hurt her. Kenzie ends up in the fight for his fate to prove his innocents, even as he starts to question if he did it by purpose or not. For more information and a little reading from the book go to this website.

When Alison DeLaurentis went missing, her 4 friends, Emily, Spencer, Aria, and Hanna, grew distant very quickly. Hanna became a totally new person, Aria moved for a few years, Spencer focused on being the prize child, & Emily stuck to her swimming every day. A few years went by, they heard nothing from Alison. That is until they started getting messages from a mysterious person by the name of A. She knew all of secrets that only Alison was supposed to know. Everything that happened the second it happened. The girls must face their buried secrets, and find out who this A is. Is this some kind of sick joke, or is Alison coming back to haunt them? They face their own problems with friends, boys, family issues, and all through it getting these haunted messages from A. Who is she? Is Alison back? Will their secrets be exposed? I love this book because it is full of suspense, and it leaves you wondering all night, who could it be? What’s going to happen next? The author writes so well it makes you crave to read the next one! I strongly recommend this book; you will definitely not regret reading it! The descriptions of the scenes, just makes you imagine it as your own little movie. It’s like you are there with the characters! They are so real, like this is a true story. If someone was to ask me the bets book I have ever read, and one that they should read too, it would definitely be this one!

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick is written through the perspective of the main character, Nora Grey, who finds her life in danger when she becomes involved with a mysterious new student at her school named Patch, who is revealed to be a fallen angel with a dark connection to Nora herself.I liked this book because it is unique and it isn’t like most other fiction books that I have read. I have never read a book about fallen angels; usually the ones I have read have vampires or very generic people/creatures in them. This is actually one of my favorite series because there is a lot of suspense and mystery mixed into everyday life, and the characters are really relatable so you feel like you’re part of the story. For example Vee Nora’s best friend reminds me of one of my good friends. I have also read the second and third books of the series and I am currently waiting for the fourth and final book to be released which ironically is titled “Finale” And it will be released in November 2012. Hush Hush was published October 13 2009.

The Secret
ReplyDeleteRhonda Byrne
My whole family has read the book The Secret. It is self-help, life changing, short book. The author (Rhonda Byrne) is trying to better lives across the country. To sum it up, positives attract positives. Inside the short novel there are real life scenarios in which this tactic has helped. There are also quotes and such to push you along your way. Even if your life is pretty great, this can make it even better! If there is even one person negatively bringing your life down that can change. The book also brings in laws of science. Positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative. Energies are everywhere and they all have effects on each other.
There are two other books she has written on the same topic as The Secret. One of the books is The Magic. It is a 28-day process using the knowledge from The Secret. It’s a good kick-start if you’re having trouble putting the words to work on your own. This book is helpful and it’s just something you can always go back to if you need a pick-me-up. There is proof that this book works. I would strongly recommend that you check this book out and read through it! It can be found in most local libraries and won’t take you very long at all to read!

WAKE
ReplyDeleteBY: LISA MCMANN
NOT ALL DREAMS ARE SWEET.
This book called “Wake” by Lisa McMann is a very interesting book. It’s about a seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other’s people dream. Like people’s nightmares, sex-crazed dreams. What I like about this book is it’s kind of a horror book and I like scary stuff, how she helped people of their problems by not helping them in real life but helping them when people are dreaming. When you’re reading the first part it may be a bit boring but when it comes to the middle part that where the action begins. My favorite part is when she helped her teacher’s problem. Her teacher is like a “loner” no husband, children’s or families but Janie helped her by introducing someone that she knows and it worked. What I like too is when Janie learned how to control her dreams like she almost died. One of her nightmares is like she’s sinking on a lake but she wished she can have gills or fins so she can breathe underwater and swim like a fish and she did it. One last thing is I liked when she can just close her eyes and see what others dream. It’s pretty cool though. I wish I can do that too. Young readers will love this book cause of excitement, spine tingling scenes of this book “WAKE”. Kurt
The Hunger Games –Suzanne Collins
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger Games is the first book of three exciting novels filled with action. It’s about sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen who lives in North America, which is now named Panem and is separated into twelve districts. The Capitol is a high tech city that rules over all twelve districts of Panem. Every year twenty-four ‘tributes’ from the ages twelve to eighteen, one boy and one girl from each district either volunteer themselves or get randomly chosen as tribute to be in the yearly event, named ‘the hunger games’ which is also broadcasted live across the nation. It’s where all twenty-four tributes fight to the death in an arena until only one person is left standing and will be declared the winner and have the rest of their life full of luxuries. So in The Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers herself when her younger sister, Prim is chosen. The book is about what happened when she was in the arena.
When I first read this book, I just couldn’t put it down. I first read it in my grade eight class as a novel study and everybody in the class enjoyed it. It is full of suspense and at the end of every chapter there always seems to be a twist to make you want to keep reading. I would recommend the Hunger Games to anybody that was looking for a good book.

FADE By: Lisa McMinn
ReplyDeleteThe book Fade I think was really interesting, cause it shows how strong a person can really be. It had lots of action and romance in it. The main character’s Janie and Cabel are are inseparable to each other but when they find out that real life is tougher than their dreams the truth comes out. They go to a school called Feildridge High school, there is a lot of disturbing things happening there, but yet nobody’s talking about it which is a surprise, most people talk about that stuff. One thing that happened was Janie decided to tap into other classmate violent nightmare, that’s when the case finally broke open. Nothing goes as planned for Janie and Cabel. But when Cabel’s shocking behavior has a grave consequence for both Janie and him. The truth about both of them comes out. They’re just trying to carve out a little (dirty secret) time together, but they don’t have any luck at all for it. Worse yet Janie’s fate as a dream catcher sealed and the worst is to come it all goes downhill they get them self in a lot of trouble.

Book Review: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger Games is a great book, which was also made into a move, it was written by Suzanne Collins and published in 2008. This is a great book for suspense and adventure. If you like those two genres, this book would be perfect for you. This book is about 16 year old girl named Katniss Everdeen who has volunteered instead of her sister Primrose for ‘ The Hunger Games’ which was basically a way to get rid of some of the poor people in a fight to the death. Panem which used to be North America was split up into 12 districts. The people from Capitol, the advanced metropolis of Panem, with the sponsors who sponsored and gave the people in Hunger Games ‘Care Packages’ which could contain a variety of things like Food,Water,Bandages, etc.
I personally think this book was amazing and couldn’t have been written better. I liked this book for all the suspense, adventure and action in it. Another great thing is that they made a movie which can take what you imagined in your head onto the movie screen which was fantastic. All in all, this trilogy was a one of the best I have ever read. These three book, Book One: The Hunger games, book two Catching fire and book three Mockingjay, you should definitely read them.

Deltora Quest: The Forest of Silence

What would you do if your whole country was taken over by a dark lord and was keeping constant watch on everybody? One child will stand up to the task, that no one else will and his name is Lief. I liked the book for its originality because it’s a kind of book where you get to understand how they felt, and you actually thought you were there. You also thought whenever something was bad you started to get scared but when something good happens you start to have a sigh of relief.
One thing I didn’t like is that the book wasn’t long enough because it doesn’t talk so much of them traveling. It made me a little bit unhappy to see that there were no problems of them getting anywhere and it got a little boring and they just got there right away. But I thought it was a great book for its action, adventure at some point’s, twists and turns, and the comedy that came up in the points when everything would turn down for a moment. So all in all I would suggest this book to all who like magic, action, comedy and a little bit of comedy that all books should have. I guarantee that whoever reads this book will agree with me and love it.

Juiced: By Jose Canseco
ReplyDeleteThe player who changed baseball forever was one of the most intimidating hitters in the Big Leagues. On the field he was the first person to steal forty bases and hit forty homeruns, and off the field his personal life was outrageous with tales of his out of control antics and into gossip columns. But Canseco introduces one of baseball’s biggest secret, steroids. In juiced he comes clean of this wild past, sharing the truth about baseball’s steroid addiction and how they spread to every locker-room in the Major Leagues. Canseco shares how big muscles and performance enhancing drugs have changed the rules of the game forever.
I personally love this book and now look at steroids a different way after reading it. This book is very educational about baseball and steroids and you will notice Jose Canseco is a 250 pound teddy bear. I recommend this book if you are interested in baseball.

Have you ever felt like no one wanted you or that no one cared for you? Maybe the only person you’ve ever had care for you was you best friend. This is how Beth has felt her whole life. From the time she was born, up to her high school years. Beth has always felt like a beast she is constantly bullied, and never felt like she belongs. The only time she can shine is in her choir. That is the only time Beth is more than “the Beast”. One day she is selected to be the choirs’ soprano soloist, allowing their all girls’ choir to go to the choral Olympics. While there she meets Derek. She is immediately drawn in by his undying love for music. Once they get home, they do what they can to be together. But Derek isn’t able to see her often. After playing cat and mouse for some time Beth suspects some things up. That is when she discovers a life altering fact about Derek.
This is honestly one of the best books I have ever read. I love the way Beth is always coming up with songs while she is thinking to herself. You can tell how in love she is with Derek just by the way she acts when she is with him. It’s truly very touching, and knowing Derek is based upon a real person makes it all the more special. I would personally recommend this book to anyone who likes music or romance books.
Fracture
ReplyDeleteBy Megan Miranda
This fiction novel is exciting and mysterious, keeping you on edge at all times. Delaney Maxwell, a 17-year-old girl from a small town, fell through a frozen over lake. As the seconds went on she slowly ran out of air. By eleven minutes with no oxygen, death is almost definite. She was pulled out at eleven by her best friend and secret admirer, Decker Phillips. However, Delaney has defied scientific laws and is alive, thriving even. Although she should have massive brain damage, and the x-rays clearly show that, she is normal with added, non-understandable abilities.
Fracture is a nail biting, cliff hanging, and mysterious novel leaving you craving for more. Miranda makes the characters in the novel come to life, making you fall in love with them and their personalities. This book is a definite page turner, and you’ll be left wanting more and more as you get deeper into the novel. If you are interested in dramas, romances, or any mysterious novels, you should put Fracture into deep consideration.
Avi the author wrote this novel in a different and interesting style, he wrote it through diary entries, personal letters, school memos and transcripts of dialogue ,this novel talk about a student VS teacher story. The student called Philip did poorly in the teacher‘s class and the teacher tries to support him, but in reply he was rude and created a fake story that resulted In the teacher getting fired.

The Pact is a fiction novel that is full of suspense and twists in the story. The story is about teenage lovers who had a possible suicide pact. Emily and Chris were inseparable and completely in love. Emily had problems from her past she couldn’t live down; she was pregnant, and wanted to leave the earth. After Emily dies of a gunshot wound to the head, families who have been friends for years are now enemies because Chris is on trial to see if he killed Emily or had a suicide pact as he claims.
ReplyDeleteThe pact is my favorite book, but I only recommend it to teenagers and adults, it has mature content. There was nothing I did not like about this book. It was very well written and you could feel emotionally involved. Jodi Picoult made it feel like it was real when you were reading it and every word was interesting and made you want to read more. It is a very unique book and it won’t disappoint you.
